This annual award recognizes outstanding contributions to the global discourse on environmental sustainability. A cocktail reception will precede the formal award ceremony, where Edward Humes will speak about his book Total Garbage: How We Can Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World.

The Penn Libraries Book Prize in Sustainability is more than an award; it is a call to action, encouraging authors and thinkers to contribute to the vital discourse on sustaining our planet for future generations.   

Join us for an opportunity to meet our 2025 awardee.

  • 4-5pm – Cocktail reception
  • 5-6pm – Award ceremony and author presentation 

A limited number of copies of Total Garbage will be available to event guests on a first-come, first-served basis.

Edward Humes is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author whose sixteen previous books include Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair With Trash, The Forever Witness, Mississippi Mud, and the PEN Award– winning No Matter How Loud I Shout. Ed and his family, including their rescued racing greyhounds and collie, live in Southern California.
